About the Event
In partnership with the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, we are hosting a BioBlitz at Leopold's Preserve on Saturday, April 26th! A BioBlitz is a community citizen science project that focuses on recording and identifying as many species as possible within a given location and time frame.
Leopold's Preserve features many different Piedmont habitats, including wetlands, meadows, and forests. These habitats in turn nourish a diverse community of flora and fauna. Join us to explore and document the many species which call Leopold's Preserve home.
During the BioBlitz, we'll explore the Preserve and record our observations of different species. These observations must be uploaded to iNaturalist to be counted for the tally. If you haven't used iNaturalist before, we strongly recommend creating a free account and making practice observations prior to the BioBlitz. You can make observations using a smartphone app or via the iNaturalist website. For more guidance, detailed tutorials are available at https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/home.
This event is open to the public - we welcome participants of all ages and experience levels. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring plenty of water to drink.
Join the iNaturalist project for this BioBlitz: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/2025-leopold-s-preserve-bioblitz. Observations for this project will also count towards the Washington DC City Nature Challenge: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2025-washington-dc-metro-area.
