About the Event
Join the Land Stewardship team for a journey into a rare and remarkable woodland, where you’ll experience firsthand what an old-growth forest truly looks and feels like—one of the most complex and wild habitats in our region.
This program will take place entirely outdoors and will involve an easy-to-moderate walk on natural surfaces, with frequent stops for hands-on demos, stories, and Q&A. Please dress for the weather and wear suitable walking shoes. This event is suitable for ages 12 and up.
On this captivating, guided walk, we’ll visit a forest inventory plot within the Preserve that was recently added to the Old-Growth Forest Network and learn to “read” the woods. Discover the signs of a healthy ecosystem, such as towering mature trees, a multi-layered canopy, wildlife-friendly snags, a rich understory, and unique streamside microhabitats. You’ll also learn how we assess forest health and collect tree data.
Along the way, discover why old-growth forests are vital for wildlife, clean water, and climate resilience. Explore the threats they face today—from invasive plants to forest pests—and see how our dedicated team’s vigilant monitoring works tirelessly to protect Leopold’s Preserve’s majestic old-growth forest.
Location: The approximate parking location 16134 Thoroughfare Rd. When you arrive on Thoroughfare Road, please follow the directional signage which will be posted on the side of the road. It will lead you to a small mowed parking area located under power lines.
