About the Event

Leopold's Preserve offers volunteer events on the third Saturday morning of each month, from February through November.

Volunteers are welcome to stay as long as they'd like - drop in for an hour, or stay for the full event. Our volunteer activities are suitable for ages 13 and up, but volunteers under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. If you are interested in a volunteer event for younger children, please contact us.

These workdays focus on removing invasive vines from our woodlands. As part of Plant NOVA Natives' "Rescuing native trees" campaign, we will be tracking the number of native trees volunteers save from invasive vines throughout the year! These vines present a huge threat to trees, which are often choked and killed by fast-growing non-native vines. Removing the vines is a simple task, but in heavily infested areas, our team simply doesn't have the manpower to clip every vine. That's where volunteers are needed most! We work on woodland sites across the 380-acre Preserve.

March 21st: This volunteer workday is part of the Fairfax Tree Rescuers PRISM Spring Extravaganza event! Spring Extravaganza is a community-wide initiative through Fairfax and Prince William Counties to save trees and natural areas from the invasive plants that are smothering and strangling them. Join us at Leopold's Preserve on Saturday, March 21st to join in on this communitry driven stewardship opportunity!

All participants must register through our website so we can reach out with information about where to meet. If we need to cancel due to inclement weather, only registered participants will be notified.

Attire: all volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants to protect against thorns, insect bites, and poison ivy. Anyone who is dressed inappropriately (shorts, sandals, etc.) will not be allowed to volunteer. To keep yourself comfortable, we recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray.

Equipment: please bring your own pair of protective work gloves. The gloves should be made of a sturdy material such as leather. If you can, please bring a pair of garden clippers (pruners or similar). There is no running water available on site - you must bring your own bottle of water to drink.

Keep an eye on your inbox on the day before the event. We'll send you details about where to meet and what to expect.
