About the Event

Join us for a series of informative lectures on the first Wednesday of each month from December through March. The lectures will be held indoors at the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy's headquarters, just a few minutes' drive away from Leopold's Preserve. Each lecture will feature a special guest speaker who will discuss a topic relating to the natural world. Light refreshments will be provided.

December 6: "Tackling Spotted Lanternfly- What’s a Homeowner to do?" Join Virginia Cooperative Extension Natural Resources Specialist Valerie Huelsman to learn when, how, and why you should manage this expanding invasive insect and strategies to reduce its spread.

January 3: "Restoring and Expanding Native Plant Habitat" presented by Matt Bright of Earth Sangha. Learn about common native plants that make up our forests and meadows, why these plants are critical for wildlife, and how we can make these populations healthier on public and private lands through restoring and reconnecting habitat.

February 7: "Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve" presented by Virginia Outdoors Foundation Conservation Assistants Deneith Reif and John Lenox. The lecture will be followed by an optional hike through the Bull Run Mountains Preserve.

March 6: "Virginia Snake Talk and Overview" presented by Bill Crisp of K2C Wildlife Encounters. Learn to identify and safely handle Northern Virginia's native snakes, and discover their ecological importance. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with live snakes and learn about intervention and sustainable practices to deter them from entering homes and yards. Demos will include snake removal from sticky traps and an overview of field equipment.

The Leopold's Preserve Winter Lecture Series is presented through a partnership of the White House Farm Foundation and the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy.
